Spotlight on Love, Dad: Q&A with Executive Director and Co-Founder, Kevin Gruenberg, PsyD
Love, Dad uplifts families with young children in historically marginalized communities in California by equipping individuals, organizations and systems with knowledge, skills, and resources to effectively engage whole families. We had the opportunity to learn from Kevin about their work, commitment to equity, engagement with Promise coaching!
What’s one thing you wish more people knew about your organization?
People often assume Love, Dad is about fathers—but our work is fundamentally about whole-family well-being. We believe children can’t thrive unless all caregivers, including fathers, are supported. Love, Dad is redefining family support by building systems that center every parent’s mental health and engagement. We help public systems move beyond outdated gender norms toward inclusive, culturally responsive care that strengthens families, especially in historically marginalized communities.
How have you put equity at the center of your work this year?
For Love, Dad, equity means every parent, regardless of gender or circumstance, has access to meaningful support. This year, in partnership with LA County’s Department of Mental Health, we are training therapists across all county clinics in father-inclusive, family-centered perinatal care. Historically, paternal mental health, and more broadly family-centered wellbeing, has been excluded from early childhood systems; our work is changing that. We are closing critical gaps in care and ensuring all families, especially those in marginalized communities, can thrive.
Share an example of how you’ve gotten to engage with Promise lately/this past year.
I’ve engaged with Promise this year through one-on-one coaching with Erasma Beras-Monticciolo, focusing on everything from organizational strategy and development to grant writing and leadership growth. More than a coach, Erasma has been an inspiring mentor whose guidance has helped me grow as a leader. Her support has positioned our organization to thrive. This experience has been personally and professionally transformative.
