Spotlight and Q&A on MathTalk

MathTalk creates opportunities for children & families, particularly those in economically distressed areas, to discover & enjoy math anywhere. We had the opportunity to learn from MathTalk about their work, commitment to equity, and recent partnerships!

What’s one thing you wish more people knew about your organization?

MathTalk is more than just an app or a set of tools; we’re building math ecosystems that connect families, educators, and communities. We turn everyday spaces into opportunities for joyful math, from neighborhood MathTrails to interactive apps like Math!Everywhere! and programs like MathBuck$ that link math learning to real-world rewards. We want people to know that math doesn’t just live in classrooms, it lives in parks, businesses, and the everyday social and cultural fabric of our communities. MathTalk is making math fun, meaningful, and valuable for kids and families everywhere!

How have you put equity at the center of your work this year?

MathTalk was founded on the belief that math literacy is a civil right and a determinant for success later in life. This year, we have tripled down on our efforts to ensure that all children and families everywhere have access to this learning in their own communities through our free Math!Everywhere! App and Summer Math Meet Ups.

What’s one partnership or collaboration that has been particularly meaningful or impactful for your work this year?

One partnership that has been especially meaningful this year is our collaboration with 28 local businesses and community organizations in Cambridge and Boston through the MathBucks pilot. Families earn MathBuck$ through the Math!Everywhere! app and redeem them for real rewards at neighborhood shops, connecting math learning to the local economy. This partnership has been powerful because it brings families, educators, and small businesses together, creating a shared investment in kids’ learning and in the vibrancy of the community.
